5th May 2012

Peterborough, Torquay, Sunderland, Darlington

The actual fixtures were:

    1. Peterborough no match for the Championship season ended last week
    2. Hereford v Torquay (League Two match)
    3. Fulham v Sunderland (Premier League match)
    4. Darlington no match for the Conference Premier League season ended last week.

The results were:

    1. Peterborough (0 points)
    2. Hereford 3 v Torquay 2 (1 point)
    3. Fulham 2Sunderland 1 (1 point – Played on Sunday 6th May 2012)
    4. Darlington (0 points)

The first thing to note is that the seasons are drawing to a close and not at the same time.  Old Moore yields forecasts until 19th May and starts again on the 4th August; this is outside of the seasons (some ended 28th April, others 5th May and most by 13th May).  So I will not include the last week of forecasts for this season as none of the teams will be playing.  This has already had its affect on this week’s fixtures with two of teams not playing and unfortunately the two that were playing did not conform to Old Moore’s predictions with two home wins.

28th April 2012

Colchester, Hull, Charlton, Boston

The actual fixtures were:

    1. Colchester v Tranmere (League One match)
    2. West Ham v Hull  (Championship match)
    3. Preston v Charlton (League One match)
    4. Boston v Guiseley (Blue Square North match)

The results were:

    1. Colchester 4 v Transmere 2 (1 point)
    2. West Ham 2 v Hull 1 (1 point)
    3. Preston 2Charlton 2 (3 points)
    4. Boston 3 v Guiseley3 (3 points)

This set of fixtures has raised another important issue that I hadn’t truly given much thought about.  i.e. not every game that is played appears on the Pools and once again with Boston in the 6th tier of English football the draw that their game yielded is superfluous to whether one would win the jackpot.  This is something I will have to address next season.  But that aside two score draws in a week is a good haul of points.  Let’s see if it continues to the end of the seasons.

21st April 2012

Hereford, Bolton, Kilmarnock, West Ham

The actual fixtures were:

    1. Hereford v Northampton Town (League Two match)
    2. Bolton v Swansea  (Premier League match)
    3. Hibernian v Kilmarnock (Scottish Premier League match)
    4. Leicester v West Ham (Championship match)

The results were:

    1. Hereford 0 v Northampton Town 0 (2 points)
    2. Bolton 1 v Swansea 1 (3 point)
    3. Hibernian 0 v Kilmarnock 1 (1 point – Played on Sunday 22nd April)
    4. Leicester 1 v West Ham 2 (1 point – Played on Monday 23rd April)

At the end of Saturday two games had been played and we had a draw and a no-score draw and I got quite excited.  But I was brought down to earth with the remaining two games and the Status Quo resumed.  This is not a strong subject for Old Moore but we will analyse it in detail when the seasons end.

I will leave the results to speak for themselves, 2 heavy defeats and 2 no score draws.  a step iin the right direction but no cigar.

7th April 2012

Wrexham, Sheffield Wed, Swansea, Gretna

The actual fixtures were:

    1. Wrexham v Alfreton Town (Conference Premier match)
    2. Huddersfield v Sheffield Wed  (League One match)
    3. Swansea v Newcastle Utd (Premier League match)
    4. Stirling University v Gretna (2008) (East of Scotland League match)

The results were:

    1. Wrexham 0 v Alfreton Town 1 (1 point)
    2. Huddersfield 0 v Sheffield Wed (1 point)
    3. Swansea 0 v Newcastle 2 (1 point – Played on Friday 6th April)
    4. Stirling Univestity 2 Gretna 2008 (1 point)

So here we are again with no draws (score or otherwise) to speak of.  I will not dwell on this too long but an interesting point to note is that it appears to me that the ‘predictors‘ (if that is the correct term) are relying on an old list of football clubs and not considering which league they play in or whether there is a chance as whether they would appear on the pools coupon.  Obviously it is a near impossibility for them to determine whether any one particular team will be on the coupon or indeed which day they will play one a year before the game takes place.  However, there are certain teams which are always on the coupon (the ‘League’ teams) and some that are only rarely on the coupon (‘the non-League’ teams).  Then there are the teams that no longer exist.  Gretna (a Scottish Premier League team) were declared bankrupt and ceased to exist at the end of the 2007-2008 season, a fact that should be plainly obvious to the ‘predictors‘.  Gretna 2008 were formed out of the ashe of that club but have had to start in the lowest league and a new started team and hence currently play in the East of Scotland League.  Gretna 2008 will therefore exxtremely rarely (let’s face facts – never) appear on the Pools Coupon and hence is a wasted prediction (I have given them one point out of kindness).

So come on Old Moore’s Almanack either drop the section (as your predictions – for the first three months of 2012 at least – have been poor) or concentrate on a smaller or more selected group of teams.

31st March 2012

Chesterfield, Manchester Utd, Stockport, Falkirk

The actual fixtures were:

    1. Chesterfield v Scunthorpe (League One match)
    2. Blackburn v Manchester Utd  (Premier League match)
    3. Kettering Stockport (Conference Premier match)
    4. Falkirk v Hamilton Academical (Ramsden Cup Final)

The results were:

    1. Chesterfield 1 v Scunthorpe 4 (1 point)
    2. Blackburn 0 v Manchester Utd (1 point – played on Monday 2nd April)
    3. Kettering 1 v Stockport (1 point)
    4. Falkirk 1 v Hamilton Academical 0 (1 point – played on Sunday 1st April)

March ended with a whimper and has made the previous good week’s results seem like a fluke as the final day of March yielded no draws (score or otherwise).  OK Falkirk were playing in the Cup Final and Manchester United were not playing until the Monday but still no excuses as the prediction claim to be good for two days either side of the date given.  April is the final ‘full month’ of the various football leagues in the UK so we will see if their can be any redemption before the end of the season.

24th March 2012

Northampton, Nottingham Forest, Crewe

The actual fixtures were:

    1. Northampton v Plymouth (League Two match)
    2. Nottingham Forest v Brighton  (Championship match)
    3. Hereford v Crewe (League Two match)

The results were:

    1. Northampton 0 v Plymouth 0 (2 points)
    2. Nottingham Forest 1 v Brighton 1 (3 points)
    3. Hereford 0 v Crewe (1 point)

The first thing to note about this week’s predictions is that there are only 3 teams mentioned.  I do not know the reasoning behind this and it is the only week where there are 3 teams.  Saying that we have a good haul of points, a score draw and a no-score draw.  March is ending quite strongly, although probably still not enough for us to give up our jobs.  We have one more week in March, let us see what happens.
